Hyper-Realism pertains to a kind of art that illustrates further than what an object or piece should be by the utilized additional pictorial elements that creates illusion of realm to the viewer.
Jamie Salmon is British while Jackie Seo is Korean. They are both contemporary sculptors who live and practice their careers in Vancouver, Canada.
They grew as talented sculptors on their own effort and started their careers by working as commercial artists for the film industry.
Jamie Salmon specialized his skill in hyper-realism sculpture on both portrait and figurative. He uses silicone rubber, fabric, hair and resin as materials in his art works.
According to Jamie, the most important part of his artistic process is the initial idea for the work.
If the initial idea is not strong as it should be, then no matter how long the moulding, painting and other process of sculpting will be and no matter how well done, everything will be for nothing and the work will fall flat.
As a hyper-realist, Jamie wants his works to tell sort of story to the viewer. He requires his works to have certain degree of reality in a heightened manner so he always prefers a life-size piece to make.
He also hopes that his work will convey real sense of emotion in every way.
Jackie Seo on the other hand said, that whenever she thinks about life, it reminds her of the car repair ad that oftentimes appear in the classified that says, “scratches, dents, peeling?”.
She believes that life is also imperfect and there’s always something that needs constant maintenance. As a hyper-realist, Jackie wants to show the subtleties of the challenges of life in a sculptural form.
By showing the things like tears, flushing of skin, fine lines and wrinkles without getting lost in the details can make her portray her idea and make the viewers feel the empathy of the characters on her sculptures.
