People say that to become an artist, it should run in your blood and you should also have the exposure and right environment. If that is the case, there is no wonder how and why Craig Shields has become one of the youngest and finest Graphic Artists in the world today.
To begin with, Craig was born to an Artist-mum. His Grandmother, Great grandmother, and ancestors were also artists. That is why when he was very small, it was a natural thing for him to pick up a pen and scribble. Unfortunately, he was almost always reprimanded as he filled his books with all his drawings. Good thing, this paid off.
It can be said that the internet was one very indispensable tool for Craig. In 2004, he came across Depthcore which is his inspiration. He went on to learn about digital art and started making his own creations. His efforts proved fruitful as he eventually became a member of the group.
Right now, Craig is already finishing his last year in design school. However, he admits that it doesn’t serve him well. He was wrong when he thought that such course would expose him to learning Photoshop techniques which is his passion. He ends up stitching websites, page after page.
What is interesting about Craig is that he doesn’t read tutorials as he easily gets bored. In order to keep his interest going, he tries to explore and do things which are new to him—things which are out of his style, to test his limits. That is why if you see his works, you can see variety and quality at the same time.
Look to The Future
Asked what his strengths are, he says that the most important strength he has is his determination to become an even better Graphic Artist. He does this by reading more magazines, books, blogs and websites and learning how other artists have gone their way to where they are now.
After Craig graduates, he plans to take things one at a time. It’s a perfect thing to do so that he can become every single thing he envisions himself to be.
